| Nope, this has nothing to do with WoW! But I'm curious, and would be glad if you could help me. Is this something you would continue reading, if it was the first page in a book you grabbed from a shelf in the store? Why/why not?
These buildings are like prisons. The senate calls them “skyscrapers”. Magnificent constructions in a magnificent city, a wonder which man has never laid it’s eyes upon before. They can call them whatever they like. To me, they’re the dirty, atrophied hands of beggars, reaching out of the slum, a dejected cry for help. They are the chains in which I wither away.
The windows have no bars. That’s the first thing that springs to my mind every morning I wake up. Every day, it’s always the same. It does not stop to baffle me. As I sit up, freeing myself from the blanket in which I am entwined, the bed squeaks. It’s like a protests - it does not want me to leave. And to be honest, if I could, I’d stay. I don’t want to play their game anymore. I don’t think I can pretend for another minute. Let them put a lock on my door, a guard in my hall, and finally, the bars on my window - the ones which surprise me every time they are not there. I don’t care. They are there already, inside my head. Another thing which always baffles me each morning is my face. There’s a stranger in the age-spotted mirror glass. Well, she’s not really a stranger anymore, I know her by now. But she isn’t me. My skin is not sickly pale. I’ve never had dark circles underneath my eyes like that. And my eyes… they sing, a depth of golden brown. The stranger’s eyes are dark and flat. As I stare at this familiar stranger, one of the other beds squeak behind me. I can see her face in the mirror as she blinks against the cold, sharp sunlight. A few years ago, I would have mistaken Jen for a long-lost sister. Her hair is the same shade of ashy brown and her face holds the same kind of sharp hollowness. “Aaah…”, she groans, stretching like a cat on the thin madras.

| Why?
You really built up some curiosity here. This senate, is it a strict authoritarian dystopia in line with Airstrip One, or is it just how the character perceives her world? If the second, what has happened to induce her depression?
I'd love to read more. | |
